When we begin our weekend treks to the river in late spring, it feels like a lot of work to me. Packing, planning, loading, bringing all the pets (we bring our dog, our bird and our guinea pig!)... Plus we just love *home* so much, that it's hard to leave it...
But what I don't remember at those times (and NEED to) is that these weekends are Sheer Joy. Each weekend feels better and more Joyful (even when we didn't think that was possible) than the last...and being removed from the *normal* day-to-day stuff in our lives (OK...there is *no* normal for unschoolers...) is exactly what is needed sometimes to allow the highest level of Sheer Joy into our lives and our hearts.
This weekend was HOT and we spent much of it *wet*.
Last week, while Sam and Jake and Dave went to the movies to see Hellboy (Jake was SO drawn to the art style of that movie, as it was the same guy who did Pan's Labyrinth), I went to buy groceries for the weekend. Our store was having a barbecue in the parking lot, giving away absolutely delicious free food. The plate on which it was served was tucked inside of a frisbee.
When we were packing and leaving for the river, Sam grabbed the frisbee and put it in the Jeep. He then thought about bringing it onto the river, playing with it in the water at one of our many kayaking stops to swim and eat. But after we launched, the water was so calm for a long time that I suggested he get it out so that we could toss it around in our kayaks. After many experiments to make sure it wouldn't sink, we did.
And New Joy was born! We invented this game, which at first we named Fryak (Frisbee Kayak), but that didn't stick...and when we played again on Sunday, we re-named it Riv-Bee (River Frisbee). We like that one.
MAN, this is FUN. There is a lot of laughing and inventive throwing/catching going on...not to mention a lot of colliding of kayaks as we race to be the one to get the frisbee!
Ya know...I almost gave back that frisbee...thinking we wouldn't use it...not wanting them to waste resources...
Any Little Thing Can Be The Source of Inspiration...and Just Might Bring Joy and Connection and World-Expanding Infinite Possibilities into Your Lives...

And now it was Sam's turn. Yes, he did it! In his own time...in his own way...completely motivated by his *own* desire...my boy learned how to ride a bike really well this weekend...
Man, I just love him in those silly, no-lens 3-D glasses...
Dave:
Dave and I went for a long morning exercise walk, then we bathed in the river. The water was SO warm...warmer than the air...and it was so simply delicious that we recommended a swim to Jake when he got up...Dave took this as Jake was heading back up to the cabin...
We went into the little river town of Callicoon for ice cream and pizza, and this was the view as we crossed the river on our way home...
